"You might want to write this down." "I don't know, he's like Obi-Wan." "This is not John. This is my friend." LOST 6.5 RECAP

Last night, things picked up in speed and it felt like part 2 to episode 3. I am crazy busy at work this week so I will give you what I can. Likes, dislikes, loves, thoughts, theories:

What I liked:

-          Jin’s truth, then lies.
-          Kate almost shooting Jack
-          Jacob’s philosophy
-          Back to the caves
-          Jack can’t remember his surgery.

What I disliked:

-          Very little. I was disappointed that we didn’t find out who’s skeletons are in the cave, but whatever.

What I LOVED:

-          Anything that came out of Hugo’s mouth. “And I just lied to a samurai,” was probably my favorite. What’s yours?
-           108 Degrees
-          ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER!!!
-          Claire gives him the ax. (That’s right. I went there.)
-          7 years… 7 years… 7 years.. and 7 years.
-          Jack’s revelation.
-          Flock comes for his disciple.

Thoughts and theories:

-          The easy one is first and there has been a lot of talk that the two skeletons in the cave are Rose and Bernard and I think last night is as close as we are ever going to come to that answer. They didn’t say it overtly, but through Hugo’s dialog, I can see that it is Rose and Bernard and that’s the only answer we are ever going to get on it.

-          Dogen says to Hurley in Japanese: You are lucky that I have to protect you. Otherwise, I would cut your head off.

-          We are beginning to see how characters in the 2004 timeline are having weird memories of their alternative self’s from the 2007 timeline. Jack can’t remember how he got is appendix out, which happened on the Island in the 2007 timeline, but his mom tells him he had it out when he was 7, but you can see the look of doubt on his face.

-          The Lighthouse is a DHARMA station in L.A. to find the Island, but what Hugo and Jack find is the Watchtower. Jacob can watch his ‘candidates’ and summon them. And yeah, I know the episode is called Lighthouse, but it seems to me

-          108 = 4+8+15+16+23+42 and Jacob tells Hurley to turn the Watchtower to 108 degrees to help someone find their way to the Island. There wasn’t much more significance in those numbers again in this episode beyond them being assigned to people. So, who is 108? It could be anybody. My wife said it’s probably Jack’s kid, but I don’t think that Jack has a kid in the 2007 timeline. It’s been alluded to that the events in the new 2004 timeline are radically different to what happened in the 2007 timeline. In 2004, not only did the flight not crash, but a whole bunch of other things as well that led to like Ben being a school teacher and the Samurai has a musically gifted kid.

-          So, once again, who is 108? I would love to hear what people think on this one, but I am going to say either Desmond or Widmore, and I have nothing to back that up, but a gut feeling that Desmond or Widmore’s work is not yet done.

-          This was a very good Jack episode too. Jack is finding himself and finding answers. As Jacob puts it, some people you can tell them to write it down on their arm and some need to, “let them look out at the ocean for a little while.” It’s a great analogy of spiritual journeys. Some of us, in this life, need to be told the answers while some need to discover them on their own. Jack, who’s father always told him that he didn’t have what it took, is beginning to understand that he is important and does have what it takes and that he needs to stop thinking about what his father thought of him. Jacob wanted Jack at the Lighthouse/Watchtower to understand that he is important, but Jack need to understand that for himself. He can’t be told it.

-          So, in a lot of ways, it wasn’t that important that Hugo summon ‘candidate’ number 108. Jacob said they will get to the Island somehow. That little exercise was only for Jack’s benefit. And, maybe the person that is coming is not number 108. Maybe Jacob just picked that number because then he knew that Hugo would turn the wheel a certain way that Jack would see what he needs to see. Booyah!

-          I don’t have much to say about Claire except that she’s gone all dark side on us. But, here is what is weird. Flocke is stuck in that body. He can’t change form anymore according to Ilana. So, who is Claire seeing? Jin is seeing Flocke, but I guess Claire is so far gone that Flocke looks like whatever he wants her to see. Maybe he looks like the original Man In Black to her. Because he showed up to her twice, once as her father and then as her friend. I can’t tell if she’s just crazy and/or so far gone with the dark side. Which, means her character is probably not going to survive what happens at the showdown at the Temple. I mean, she is GONE! She wants to kill Kate for protecting and saving her child?

-          The Others also branded Claire, like they did with Julia, which was never explained , I think.

That’s all I got this week. ‘Till next time, stay good and…

"Guess I should put some pants on." "He was a better man than I could ever be." "You know the rules!" LOST 6.4 RECAP

Last night, so many questions were answered.  I knew that when Plushenko came out of retirement, it would piss everyone off. But, Lysacek gave him a run for his money and we’ll see how everyone does in the free skate tonight. Plus, that was an amazing outfit from Johnny Weir. He does respect the sport while having fun…

Oh, wait! I’m supposed to be talking about LOST. Sorry, I didn’t watch last night because, I mean, c’mon! It’s the Winter Olympics! Only happens every 4 years!

Kidding! Like, dislikes, thoughts and theories:

What I liked:

-          Sawyer drinking.
-          Hugo helping Locke
-          Rose!

What I disliked:

-          I think Chris Adams said a while back that the story is dragging or something like that. And yeah, I didn’t really love this episode. The story is sagging under answering questions. Don’t get me wrong! I love question answering, but this is reminding me of Season 2 where it took like 6 episodes for the story to get going.
-          Ben is a high school history teacher. Really?
-          Richard and Flocke’s conversation really goes no where.

Thoughts and theories:

-          At first, Flocke sees a child, arms extended with the end of his wrists looking very bloody and Richard can’t see him. Then, he shows up again and this time Sawyer can see him and Flocke gives chase. Who is the kid? At first, I was like, “Well, maybe it’s Jacob reborn,” but as soon as I say his face, I knew who the kid was: Aaron. Don’t know why or how, but that is Aaron! I know it! And until the show proves me wrong, I’m sticking with it.

-          Two minor things about Flocke last night: 1) Why chase Aaron in his “human” form? Once I got out of sight of Sawyer, I would have busted into Smoky. 2) Why is he stuck in that form? They just kind of throw that out there.

-          If Sawyer becomes a follower (disciple), then this promo pic is starting to make more sense: All of Jacob’s “followers” on the right and Flocke’s on the left. Sayid was on the list, but he’s sick just like Claire. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into this. I do that.

http://www.thegate.ca/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Lost-Last-Supper.jpg

-          Flocke takes the white stone and throws it away, off of the balance scale. But, the biggest thing last night:

4  8  15  16  23  42
IS
-       4 – Locke
8 – Reyes
15 – Ford
16 – Jarrah
23 – Shephard
42 – Kwon

WHY? WHY? WHY? So, there was hundreds of names on that wall. And those six just happened to be assigned numbers that crashed on the Island. Crashed because those numbers were part of a computer program for DHARMA that Desmond did not type in on time. Numbers that were on the side of a hatch that Locke found in the jungle. Numbers that a crazy man talked to Hugo about and he used to win the lottery. So, what are the numbers really?

Fate. Destiny. The fact that they were hand picked by Jacob. And maybe that those random numbers are truly random.

So, why isn’t Kate on the list? Jacob came to her when she was a child. So, she must have a different number that has already been crossed off. Because it’s very unclear from what they showed in the episode if there are more names not crossed off then those last 6, or last 5 now that Locke is gone. There might be 2 dozen numbers/names still on that wall and Flocke just showed the ones that Sawyer would know that aren’t crossed off.

-          From that, I don’t believe anything that Flocke says. He is the “devil” and is lying to Sawyer a lot, so when it came to the numbers and the “options”. I didn’t believe anything Flocke told Sawyer because it was:
1)      Stay Until You’re Crossed Out (means nothing as they have left and come back to the Island)
2)      Take Over And Become The New Jacob (no, why would Jacob need a successor only if he knew he was going to die and then he would have done a better job?)
3)      Leave. (which is what Flocke really wants to do)

-          Basically, Flocke gave Sawyer two crappy options that he knew Sawyer wouldn’t want and only left the third option that he knew Sawyer would take. I mean, he could have offered Sawyer like gold, women, a palace, etc. but all Sawyer wants to do is leave, so Flocke guided him to that decision.

-          And here is from Lostpedia every other time the numbers have come up:
  Spoken by Leonard in the mental hospital; he originally heard them with Sam Toomey when they were in the Navy together in the Pacific.("Numbers")
  Winning lottery numbers used by Hurley. ("Numbers")
  A transmission of the Numbers led Danielle to the Island. ("Numbers") ("The Little Prince")
  Danielle's notes contained the Numbers written 7 times, along with a mathematical formula. ("Numbers")
  On the entrance hatch to the Swan. ("Exodus, Part 2")
  On the blast door in the Swan. ("Lockdown")
  Entered into the Swan computer. ("Adrift")
  On the medicine that Desmond injects into his arm. ("Man of Science, Man of Faith"), ("Orientation")
  On the vial that Claire was injected with in the Medical Station. ("Maternity Leave")
  When Hurley's car broke down they showed the speedometer (in km/h) go from 16 to 15 to 8 to 4. The dashboard also displayed a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius and 42 km on the odometer. ("Exodus, Part 2")
  When Hurley rides past 6 players of a girls' soccer team in the airport, each uniform has one of the Numbers. ("Exodus, Part 2")
  Quite possibly put on the white rabbits on the island
  LAPD police car numbers. ("Two for the Road")
  The mileage on Hurley's fixed up Camaro displays the numbers, leading to Hurley's running away from his birthday party. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 1")
  Eko's stick has the numbers etched on it.
  Kate's trial number is 4815162342 ("Eggtown")
  Being stamped into the door of the hatch ("Some Like It Hoth")
  A transmission of the Numbers can be heard over the plane's radio as Aijira 316 crash-lands on Hydra Island. ("Namaste")

‘Till next week and see all of this on my blog if you want to comment there:

And I will post comments from emails there too at the end of the day! Now, I hope I don’t get too…

Comments On LOST 6.3 Recap

Jason Weiss -
Yeah, not a thrilling episode by any measure. I hated Sawyer's moment on the dock, not because of the moment itself, that was touching and all, but the acting in that scene was terrible!! It totally took me out of the emotion they were trying to create..

When Claire appeared at the end of the episode Shannon said "she's the new Rosseau!". I am also a bit confused about the whole consumed by darkeness stuff. So they're not being taken over by Smokey directly? I think this is probably more along the lines of what happened to Russeau's shipmates, the disease she was talking about (and that's exactly what Dogen called it). So it's probaly some form of zombiism. In fact, the entire series is going to end with everyone being zobies doing the Monster Mash at the bottom of the ocean on the sunken Island. Yup, final theory.

(UPDATE) I'm pretty sure Ron's whisper theory is wrong because they brought up in one of those "pop-up-video" repeat episodes that the whispers are the Others. And Ben told Russeau when he took her baby that if she ever heard those to run the other way. Ethan I think is just Ethan. He undoubtedly has some relevance but what it is we don't yet know.

Greg Kuh -
Some of you may not like my opinion, but here it goes.

We did learn a few things this episode, but I am going to stick my neck out and say “WORST EPISODE EVER”.
Here is why:
  • Nothing happened in the alternate reality.  We all could have guessed that Kate and Claire would be together, and that Claire will keep the baby, and it will be Aaron, and blah blah blah.
  • The ACTING WAS AWFUL.  That Lennon dude needs to be killed off ASAP.  He is the Michelle Rodriquez of season 6.  He is so awkward when he is trying to act.  COMPLETELY useless.
  • The vagueness between the others and the lostees was stupid and over done.  A couple questions unanswered is fine, but just give it up.
  • Jack appearing sick after the pill was stupid… the pill had no time to soften or dissolve.  Just stop being an emo asshole Jack.
  • maybe he was acting ill because Dogen KICKED HIS ASS for that pill

One thing I did like was…
  • Claire is back on the show.
  • Ethan
  • Secrets about the Ajira plane.
  • Seeing Ethan was great and all, and I see the timeline connection, but is it necessary or just thrown in for us fans

This is the first time that LOST let me down.  They played off the episode as if we have never seen one before and can’t take mysteries.  Stop hand feeding us the information.  –Your sister is consumed... next scene… look it is Claire..

(UPDATED) Here is an interesting theory… I can’t take credit for this.  My brother and I were going over everything, he is wondering if Jacob is actually good… and that ‘Flock’ might actually be the good guy in all this? Possible?  Look at the others, they kill people, they hunt and sneak up on people.  How do we know that the smoke monster isn’t trying to kill the ‘evil’ people?  Decent twist…

Ron Giordan -
First, there is no alternate reality. The producers said that. So, to move forward, we need to stop thinking it's alternate. This isn't Star Trek. That's why this is a "flash sideways". Both timelines run congruently with each other for a purpose - a purpose laid out by Jacob who saw this happening.

As for the "claimed" thing, here's my view: This is obviously a game between good and evil. Who gets the most souls, etc. What's interesting about "claiming" is why no babies survived on the island and it's tied to the whispering we hear. What if we are hearing the souls of people trying to get into other bodies? When they were dragging Sayid to the
Temple, we heard the whispering!!!
What if these souls are those "claimed" by Man in Locke and they are attempting to get into either dead bodies or babies...the babies never survived those attempts because they are too innocent to be born already bad...but dead adults can be "claimed" and taken over....hence, "the sickness".
Now...this leads to the importance of Aaron...since, he survived being born on the island...as did Ethan (if you remember correctly). I do have questions about this...mainly, does the "sickness" make you a bad person or just freaked out?

Personally, I loved the episode. As mentioned below, complete tribute to the best Star Wars ever made. The juxtaposition of Sayid (tortured) and Sawyer (in love, redeemed for past transgressions) was perfect.

A few notes:
Dogan - reference to the man who brought Zen Budhism to
Japan - http://www.thenagain.info/webChron/China/ZenBudd.html
Sayid was wearing Horace's suit when he was "dead" and came back to life - Horace the poet refered many times to a "cold water bath" in Rome where people would go to cure their ailments. Recently, a bath like this was found deep below Rome!

A few problems:
Ben was "healed"...so, did he have the sickness? Did he remember being shot? Sayid remembered being shot?
Are we going to start seeing all the characters in the 2004 time period getting a lot of Deja Vu? Kate did when Claire said Aaron's name when the baby was trying to come out too early.

Matt Daigle -
The whole episode struck me as a love letter to E5:TESB, right down to the sister reveal to Jack (though maybe that is just where my head is at, since I'm 99.9% certain that the first 45 minutes of Empire were filmed in Virginia).

But while I thought Sawyer's moment was heart-wrenching, I was more inrigued by Kate's reaction, who seems to really now understand that she's now stuck with Jack.

The Aldo stuff also seems to I indicate that we are not dealing with separate factions of the Others, so our Ming the Merciless figure is now especially intriguing - I want to know what his relationship with our other Other leaders are, namely Richard and Ben.

Finally, the Ethan stuff reminded me of the Mr. Friendly stuff on the mainland with Michael, that there are those who can come and go from the island. He's a solid candidate to land in that group and I want to know why.

Wendy Hathaway -
Maybe I’m a dork but I really loved the scene on the dock. I’ve always liked Sawyer – mostly for his sarcasm, etc; - but he is the character who I think has changed the most – and that’s huge esp. if you go with the redemption themes in the show. One of the best Sawyer eps

As for Claire – I’m mixed on where she’s at. If you’re “claimed” (which gave me chills when the guy said that last night) do you stay that way? Does Smokey use you and then go away? Or is it like Jason said and more “zombies” just pile up everywhere? If she has turned like Rosseau, I don’t think Rosseau was poisoned, so did Claire somehow escape that? The Others clearly know more about this than let on. They also seem to be aware of the Aljira plane crash, I kind of forgot that they were all in the same time frame now. And I love Aldo (“Always Sunny in Philadelphia!”)

One final Claire note – WHAT IS UP WITH ETHAN BEING A DOCTOR! Are there no “Others” because the island is underwater in 2004? Does he have bad intentions or is he just a random guy? Is Aaron back in the picture as being important to this whole thing? That’s how the writers played it back when they kidnapped pregnant Claire and Aaron, but then Kate rescued him and I feel like we never heard anything more about him being important to the island.

This also occurred to me – when they brought Sayid back, could he have been “poisoned” because the water wasn’t clear? Did they expect this to happen when they drowned him or was it a 50/50 chance he could have returned as himself or as Jacob (“goodness”)?

(UPDATED)Why does the Whispering seem so other-worldly then? Maybe one of those things that was cool and mysterious at the beginning of the show that they don’t want to answer any more
Ron’s right about alternate reality – I think the EW blogger that I INSIST you check out called it “OTHER” because it’s happening at the same time – and turning out similarly, as well, like Matt B. pointed out

Tracey Hayes -
I wonder if we're assuming a lot when we're thinking there are only two "sides" to this whole story: Flocke's side, or Jacob's side.  What if the Others are really more like a third group, caught in between Flocke and Jacob?  They can work with Jacob to some extent (like through Richard), but like Dogen said, they were all "brought" there, which makes the whole situation sound completely against their will, and like they are caught in between two forces.

I'm also wondering if maybe either side can "claim" people?  What if Christian is actually on Jacob's side of things, and what if the Others are wrong about Claire being "claimed" by Flocke, or darkness?  Or, what if she made a choice after Christian approached her and ended up going rogue like Rosseau to avoid being "claimed" by either side?

Matt Burkhar -

I just realized something.

So do you recall what Jacob and the Man in Black were discussing on the island when that ship came in…? Something about how they come, and everything will keep repeating itself, etc… That may speak to the show as a whole, as we can clearly see that everything that happened on the island is happening again… (the whole Claire is the new Rousseau thing…) Also, how the alternate reality is playing out just as it did on the island.

Theme of LOST: history repeats itself, and human nature never changes. Whether black or white, light or dark, good or bad, everything turns out the same in the end.
